Grace, before going to the shop:
At the shop:
After returning from the shop, and before disassembly for sandblasting and
repainting:
-
A lower, meaner look is noticeable with the
new suspension in place -- note the cutouts for tire clearance.
(36k)
-
This picture (with the dummy block in place)
shows the amount of engine setback - notice the red line drawn approximately
where the #1 spark plug is now located. Also notice: 1) the new electric
fan, 2)new aluminum radiator, and 3)the new radiator mounts.
(52k)
-
Here's a shot that shows the custom headers
we'll test with. They give us great ground clearance as well as keep
the heat off the starter and away from the oil filter. (42k)
-
A picture of the new and better driver's seat
and new window net mounts. (37k)
-
The front suspension reworked, showing: 1)
the front weight jack, 2) the tubular upper A-arm, 3) the front spring, notice
the cutout in the frame to access it easier, and 4) the new top shock mount.
It's mounted outside of the spring because of the weight jack, and
so we can use a true racing-style shock absorber. (45k)
-
Looking forward on the driver's side, showing
where the front bay bar mounts to the front hoop (A), as well as the radiator
fan (B), and new mounts for the radiator (C). (48k)
-
Looking behind the driver at the rear suspension,
showing the 9" Ford-type rear end assembly (A), the stock lower control arms
(soon to be replaced)(B), and the "third" link that attaches to the top of
the rear end housing and to the chassis(C). (41k)
-
Directly behind the car, looking at the headers
and their outlets (LH and RH, no mufflers or turn-downs installed at this
time) as well as the left rear weight jack (A) and many of the new bars installed
at the shop. (58k)
-
From the passengers rear side of the car, here's
the left rear spring in it's new mount (A), the end of the stock frame where
the fabricated rear stub attaches (B), and the battery mount, behind the
driver and on the left side (C). (47k)
Grace in progress (taken 12 December 2000):
NOTE: in these pictures, some of the new sheet
metal looks like it has something on it -- it does. It's the protective
plastic that comes on the colored side of the aluminum sheet, and will be
removed when we paint the car. Honest.
Fender flares, part 1 (January, 2001)
Fender flares, part 2 and other work (December, 2001)
More on fender flares and other work (December 2002/January 2003)
-
I adjusted the back edge of the rear flares
to blend in at less of an angle, makes for less material and a smoother line
- the black area is the added part (22k)
-
The hood is mounted on it's hinges now. You
can also see the beginning of the repainting of the chassis from black to
gray on the bar behind the grilles and the front bay bars
(22k)
-
Another shot showing the repainting in process
and the preliminary mounting of components on the engine to see how they
fit (22k)
-
Here's a picture of the engine bay with the
intake we plan on starting out with, Holley carburetor, heat shield and Moroso
valve covers. Notice just how close that front bay bar comes to the alternator!
The 15 X 10 Diamond Racing Wheel and slick on the driver's side really shows
up in the wheel well, as do the master cylinders for the clutch and brakes
mounted on the firewall (21k)
-
This is what the hood looks like when it's
closed. Fit isn't perfect, but I've heard that the original OAI hoods weren't,
either (15k)
-
The first module of the wiring -- this contains
the oil pressure, oil temperature and water temperature gauges as well as
all the warning lights mounted on top. Sorry this picture's so blurry - I'm
not that good a photographer (18k)
-
The cars are all sleeping. From right to left,
the Red Bullet, Grace, and Chelsea's 85 RX-7 we raced from 1998 to 2000.
Grace's not in the garage because I'm having to work on daily-drivers and
the "transmission-itis" we've had around here (15k)
